5. Other Social Networking / Bookmarking Sites

There are a bunch of Social Networking sites out there. The key to using them is to submit original content to them. Do not, repeat do not let them syndicate your site. Why? Snippets and duplicate content penalties. Do not dig a deeper hole with Google than your already in by letting your original content be duplicated.

Now what is a snippet you ask? A snippet is the descriptor or introductory phrase for your article or site. If another website grabs the snippet from your feed, and it ranks higher than your site, Google will list their page and push yours to the supplemental results.

So what should you do and how should you submit your sites.

Manually submit your site with different descriptions. At a minimum, it should go to Digg.com and Stumbleupon.com.

Digg is a social popularity site. For sites like Digg.com, unless you belong to a Digg ring, your affiliate site article for ringworm treatment will not get noticed. If you join a Digg ring, you will probably get caught and banned from Digg. Sites that depend on popularity want fresh, original, well-thought out article submissions.

Stumbleupon.com is a bookmarking site. This is where you place personal bookmarks to pages that you like. You never violate the rules by having pages listed in bookmarking sites. (Read the rules, some sites do not allow certain categories to be listed.

Zimbio.com is a site where you can promote a subject that you're interested in by building little "wikizines." I'm ambivilent about Zimbio due to my not using it right and selecting "auto promote," which pulled my RSS feeds go back and read the beginning of this section about snippets....you get the general drift. On the other hand, if handled correctly Zimbio is a powerful tool.

The safest list is one containing bookmarketing sites, so here you go...
